The Greek government has successfully dismantled a major international drug trafficking operation that was moving large amounts of cocaine concealed within leather sheets sent from Bolivia, according to police reports released on Friday.
The cocaine, which was treated with salt and infused into the leather, was transported to Greece via container ships. Once it arrived, the cargo was taken to a lab set up by the trafficking group in the suburban area of Pikermi, Athens, where the cocaine was extracted and prepared for distribution.
In a recent raid, officers searched the premises for further evidence and arrested several suspects at the scene. This investigation has been ongoing for months, initiated after a tip from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Greek authorities closely monitored the group before taking action.
So far, a total of 11 individuals have been arrested, including people from Bolivia and Spain. At least one of those detained is believed to have had detailed knowledge of the smuggling operations.
During the police raid, authorities confiscated 300 packages containing a mixture of salt and cocaine, estimating that the overall quantity of cocaine at the laboratory exceeded 800 kilograms (about 1,764 pounds).
The suspects are expected to appear before a prosecutor on Friday to face charges. Police noted that this smuggling method indicates that drug traffickers are adapting their strategies for transporting cocaine from South America to Europe, opting for more discreet and innovative techniques.
This incident marks the second major case in Greece involving drugs hidden in fabrics or clothing. In late May, police broke up another trafficking ring that was importing garments soaked in liquid cocaine from Ecuador.
