ITS Begins $365 Million Terminal Expansion At Port of Long Beach
International Transportation Service (ITS) has kicked off an ambitious growth project at the Port of Long Beach aimed at enhancing shipp
ing efficiency and expanding terminal space. This $365 million initiative officially broke ground on July 11, and it will add 19 acres of new land to the Pier G terminal by filling in an unused water slip. The newly created space will be utilized for stacking additional shipping containers and improving overall terminal operations.
Additionally, ITS plans to construct a new wharf, stretching three to four hundred feet, which will enable two of the world's largest container ships to dock simultaneously. City officials are excited about the project, highlighting its potential benefits for the port, local workforce, and entire supply chain. The Mayor of Long Beach mentioned that ITS, a longstanding tenant at the port for over 50 years, is making an investment that promises long-term advantages. The Mayor also noted that this expansion will facilitate smoother cargo movement and create stable union jobs with competitive pay.
Port of Long Beach officials pointed out that ITS was the first company to sign a green lease almost two decades ago, demonstrating an early commitment to reducing environmental impact. They emphasized that ITS is now continuing its efforts to enhance terminal capacity. The CEO of the Port stated that the new construction will bolster the U.S. economy by improving infrastructure and increasing efficiency.

The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners also commended ITS for its efforts in reducing emissions and increasing cargo transportation by rail. Officials described ITS as a strong environmental partner, lauding its modernized operations. ITS has indicated that this project will rely on local labor and American-made materials. According to the CEO of ITS Long Beach, the goal is to strengthen the nation’s supply chain while maintaining both economic and environmental benefits in the U.S.
The expansion positions ITS to better prepare for the future of global trade by upgrading critical infrastructure right at home. The ITS terminal, located in the outer harbor, is currently split by a large slip that is deemed unnecessary. The plan calls for filling this area with around 25 million cubic yards of sediment, sourced from reused materials from the Port’s Harbor District and dredged sediment from Newport Harbor in Newport Beach.
Construction is expected to wrap up by late 2028. Once completed, the expanded terminal will provide ITS and the Port of Long Beach with increased space, improved ship-handling capabilities, and a smoother, more efficient flow of shipments.
