6 Workers Arrested For Involvement In Cocaine Smuggling At the Largest Greek Port
Greek authorities have apprehended six employees working at the port on accusations of attempting to smuggle drugs through Piraeus Port, which is the largest port facility in Greece. This marks the third incident in three years where port workers have been arrested for their connections to drug trafficking.
According to reports, the individuals were part of a private company responsible for cargo operations at Piraeus Port. They face serious charges of being involved in international organized crime, although they have denied these allegations.
The drugs were reportedly concealed within refrigerated containers loaded with bananas shipped from Ecuador. This method is commonly used to disguise cocaine being transported from South America. The region near Guayaquil serves as a major transshipment area for drugs and is also renowned for its banana production. When hidden among banana shipments, it's often challenging for customs officers to detect the drugs.
Bananas are typically exported to Europe and North America, both of which are key destinations for the illicit drugs. The Greek police launched an investigation after receiving a tip-off and monitoring communications related to the drug gang, which was linked to an Albanian crime organization.
This group took advantage of the employees' access to port areas and vessels, directing them to locate ships and extract the drugs from their containers. The Albanian Mafia is a central player in cocaine smuggling and has close ties to Italy's Ndrangheta, a notorious drug mafia in Europe.
The arrests occurred following a raid in the Neo Ikonio area of Piraeus. Authorities caught four stevedoring workers red-handed as they were retrieving cocaine from a shipping container. In an attempt to escape, the suspects fled in a Porsche SUV, prompting police to shoot at its tires to halt their getaway.
