Ocean Cruise has celebrated the delivery of its latest ship, the Viking Vesta, in a ceremony at Fincantieri's ship
yard located in Ancona, Italy. This new vessel is a compact cruise ship, boasting a gross tonnage of around 54,300 tons and equipped with 499 staterooms that can accommodate up to 998 guests.
Viking Vesta is set to join the company's fleet of ocean liners and will embark on her inaugural season sailing through the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. While she can operate on standard marine diesel, her design incorporates future-ready technologies, allowing for easy retrofitting to integrate new systems as they become widely adopted.
The delivery of Viking Vesta follows closely on the heels of an announcement by Viking and Fincantieri regarding the Viking Libra, which is touted as the world's first hydrogen-powered cruise ship aimed at achieving zero emissions. Construction for the Viking Libra is already underway at the Fincantieri facility in Ancona, and it is anticipated to feature a propulsion system that utilizes hydrogen and fuel cells, with a scheduled launch in 2026.
Following Viking Libra, the next ship on the horizon is the Viking Astrea, also currently in the building phase, set to be completed by 2027. This ship, too, will run on hydrogen power.
Viking is committed to long-term growth and expansion, planning to take delivery of 27 new river ships by 2028, along with an additional 10 ocean vessels by 2031. By the end of 2028, the company is projected to operate a total of 111 river ships and 23 ocean-going vessels, including expedition ships, by 2031.
