AngloEastern Univan Group, a leading player in unbiased ship management services, is thrilled to announce the launch of Mission 30. This ambitious initiative aims to boost the representation of its management-level officers—such as Captains, Chief Officers, Chief Engineers, and Second Engineers—under the age of 30 from a mere 1% to 30% by the year 2030.
Considering the shifting landscape of crew demographics, the tightening talent pool, and the growing demand for diverse skill sets among seafarers, AngloEastern is committed to nurturing a robust and adaptable workforce for leadership roles at sea.
To ensure that its seafarers receive thorough support and guidance for their professional growth, AngloEastern has established a Career Care team. This team consists of some of the most seasoned Marine HR leaders who will drive the Career Care Programme set to launch in 2024. This strategic initiative will offer structured career pathways, personalized guidance, and long-term skill development tailored to thriving in the fast-evolving maritime industry.
Aligned with AngloEastern's ongoing commitment to the well-being of seafarers and fueled by its WE Care initiative, the Career Care Programme will monitor and guide seafarers in their career progression. It will focus specifically on promotions to the next professional level, transitioning from ratings to officers, reskilling for different vessel types, and moving to shore jobs.
The Seafarer Workforce Report, compiled every five years and released in 2021 by BIMCO and the International Chamber of Shipping, revealed that the average age of officers at management and operational levels has increased since 2015. Furthermore, the percentage of control-level officers under 30 has been declining recently.

Vinay Singh, Group Managing Director of Marine HR at AngloEastern, noted, "We've witnessed a shift in our workforce at sea. While many of our Chief Officers and Second Engineers were once under 30, now only around 1% of our management-level officers fall into that age group." This trend presents a challenge as we prepare for a future that demands adaptability, digital fluency, and agility with innovations such as dual-fuel systems, AI integration, and smart ship technologies.
Mission 30 will include various tools and measures to accelerate the professional development of AngloEastern's seafarers:
- Personalized Career Ladder Map: Each officer will receive a tailored, visual roadmap that outlines the gap between their current position and their ideal career path.
- Targeted Training and Assessments: Focused programs will be established to prepare officers for timely promotions.
- Career Care Team Mentorship: Expert guidance will be available for seafarers on Certificate of Competency (COC) examinations, transitions between roles, and long-term career planning. Newly promoted officers will be paired with respected mentors as they navigate their new responsibilities.
So far, over 5,000 operational-level officers and cadets at AngloEastern have been encouraged to join Mission 30. Vinay Singh reaffirmed the company's commitment to shaping a workforce that is ready for the future, and to fostering a better maritime industry.
"We invite all young seafarers to seize this opportunity—to grow faster, lead sooner, and become the next generation of maritime professionals. With the right support and ambition, we can help them achieve new heights in their sea careers before turning 30. We look forward to assisting them in reaching their goals!"
