IMOPresents Gender Equality Award To Maritime Entrepreneur Karin Orsel

Karin Orsel, a prominent figure in the maritime industry, has been recognized for her efforts to promote gender equality and empower girls in business. On Friday, May 16, she received the International Maritime Organization's Gender Equality Award from Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez.

The award is presented annually to individuals who have made significant contributions to advancing gender equality within the maritime sector. Ms. Orsel accepted her award during a ceremony in London, which took place just ahead of the International Day for Women in Maritime on May 18. During her acceptance speech, she emphasized the need for stronger support networks for women, particularly those entering the industry.

“I am passionate about this industry, mentorship, and the importance of paying it forward,” she stated. “I truly hope each one of you will consider your own beginnings in this field, reflect on who supported you, and think about how you can help someone else.”

Ms. Orsel began her shipping career at just 18 and founded MF Shipping Group by the age of 23. What started as a fleet of six vessels has grown to over fifty-five, employing more than 1,000 crew members and 80 office staff. As CEO for over two decades, she has focused on creating a more inclusive workplace by recruiting diverse talent, mentoring newcomers, and supporting initiatives that enhance women's access to the sector.

Despite women remaining a minority in maritime, Ms. Orsel pointed out the emerging opportunities arising from the industry's push towards decarbonization. The IMO's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 is expected to drive innovation and the development of alternative fuels, necessitating a re-skilling and transformation of the maritime workforce.

“The energy transition presents us with an opportunity. We need new skill sets in our industry, and who better to fill those roles than the individuals in this audience?” she addressed the packed auditorium at the IMO headquarters.

Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez praised Ms. Orsel, hailing her as a role model for women and young professionals in the maritime sector. “Karin Orsel is changing the face of the maritime industry, one ship and one person at a time.”

Throughout her impressive 30-year career, she has shattered numerous glass ceilings and has actively worked to open doors for others to follow in her path. Currently, Ms. Orsel serves as the President of the European Community Shipowners Association (ECSA) and the Chair of the International Seafarers Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN). She also holds positions on the boards of several key industry organizations, including the International Chamber of Shipping, INTERCARGO, and the Royal Association of Netherlands Shipowners. Previously, she was the President of the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) International, as well as its Netherlands chapter.
